Good data management enables the location, sharing, and reuse of data, and reduces the redundancy of data. Data management tools and best practices can also help to make data more accessible and discoverable to our partners and stakeholders. Below is a list of select Data Resources from the Gulf of Mexico region developed to support restoration programs in the Gulf of Mexico.
Coastal Salinity Index
The location of the freshwater–saltwater interface along the coast is an important factor in the ecological and socioeconomic dynamics of coastal communities. Salinity is a critical response variable that integrates hydrologic and coastal dynamics including sea level, tides, winds, precipitation, streamflow, and tropical storms.
Coastal Science Navigator
An online gateway for users such as state and local planners, resources managers, consultants, and researchers to more easily gain access to USGS coastal science data, products, tools, and information.
Louisiana’s Coastwide Reference Monitoring System (CRMS)
The CRMS network includes 391 sites with standardized data collection techniques and fixed sampling schedules. Monitoring data including hydrologic, accretion, herbaceous marsh vegetation, forested swamp vegetation, soil properties, surface elevation, and land/water composition are available for download from the CRMS website.
USGS LMG WSC RESTORE Data Visualization Tool
This application provides a set of interactive data visualization tools to explore datasets generated by USGS researchers for the RESTORE project. The purpose of this tool is to help stakeholders, decision makers and other interested users access these datasets and develop a better understanding of spatial and temporal streamflow patterns in the Lower Mississippi-Gulf Region.
USGS Flood Event Viewer
During large, short-term events, the USGS collects streamflow and additional data (including storm tide, wave height, high-water marks, and additional sensor deployments) to aid in documenting flood events. The USGS Flood Event Viewer provides convenient, map-based access to downloadable event-based data.
GOM - Dashboard
Both the GOM Dashboard and the Sea-level Tool feature interactive maps for viewing either water data and associated weather data or the potential for flooding. Both maps are specific to regions along the Gulf of Mexico.
Multi-Resolution Land Characteristics Consortium (MRLC) Viewer
The Multi-Resolution Land Characteristics (MRLC) consortium is a group of federal agencies who coordinate and generate consistent and relevant land cover information at the national scale for a wide variety of environmental, land management, and modeling applications.
Coastal Change Hazards Portal
Interactive access to coastal change science and data for our Nation’s coasts. Information and products are organized within three coastal change hazard themes: 1) extreme storms, 2) shoreline change, and 3) sea-level rise. Displays probabilities of coastal erosion.

This online graphical data tool provides USGS National Water Quality Network data, water-quality loads, and trends.
