Background

Annually, a grant program announcement solicits proposals to inventory geoscientific collections, create metadata for individual samples, enhance digital infrastructure, and rescue data. The National Geological and Geophysical Data Preservation Program (NGGDPP) is administered by the USGS and provides assistance opportunities to state geological surveys and bureaus within the Department of the Interior (DOI) that maintain geological and geophysical data and samples. Other organizations are encouraged to participate in the Grant Program by partnering with eligible federal and state agencies. The federal share of any state-originated-activity may not exceed 50% of the total cost. The state match may include funding from the state geological survey, other state agency, and private industry. Annually, the availability of grants for states is announced in the fall and proposals are due in January/February. Funding is awarded for successful proposals in mid- to late-summer. Successful candidates have one year to complete the work stated in their proposals.
