Landsat Surface Reflectance-derived Spectral Indices

Landsat Collection 2 Surface Reflectance-derived spectral indices are available for Landsat 4–5 Thematic Mapper (TM), Landsat 7 Enhanced Thematic Mapper Plus (ETM+), and Landsat 8-9 Operational Land Imager (OLI)/Thermal Infrared Sensor (TIRS) Collection 2 scenes that are successfully processed to Landsat Level-2 Surface Reflectance products.

Landsat spectral indices are under the same constraints as the source Landsat Surface Reflectance products. Landsat Spectral Indices are generated at 30-meter spatial resolution on a Universal Transverse Mercator (UTM) or Polar Stereographic (PS) mapping grid.  The default file format is GeoTIFF, but options for delivery in Hierarchical Data Format (HDF) and binary are available.

Landsat spectral indices do not include any quality assessment information; however, saturated pixels are identified in the outputs. Surface Reflectance data products and the pixel quality assurance band (pixel_qa) can be utilized to obtain quality information for the scene.

Data Access

Landsat spectral indices are produced on-demand, using the USGS Earth Resources Observation and Science (EROS) Center Science Processing Architecture (ESPA) On Demand Interface.  Processing services such as reprojection and spatial sub-setting can also be requested when ordering spectral indices. 


There are no restrictions on the use of these Landsat products.  It is not a requirement of data use, but please include the following citation in publication or presentation materials based on these products to acknowledge the USGS as a data source, and to credit the original research:
