Gas piston cycles continue in the north vent. Magma rises to the surface, then spattering and gas release cause the level to drop back down. Rapid inflation continued overnight making it likely that episode 31 will start today or tomorrow.

A short overflow from the north vent at 8:45 to 8:48 pm HST went less than 100 feet. Drainback and fountaining followed the flow, typical of gas piston cycles. More short overflows may be expected if current conditions continue.

Rise and fall of magma accompanied by spattering within the north vent has become highly visible after dark today. These gas piston events are about 10 minutes apart and began around 10 AM HST when the summit began to inflate again.

Strong glow and visible spattering show magma has risen high in the north vent. Gas-pistoning resumed just after 2:00 AM HST, spattering is associated with drainback events. Episode 31 could start today but is more likely August 19 or 20.

Episode 30 lava fountains from the north vent ceased erupting at 12:55 PM HST today August 6. The south cone quit erupting about 5 minutes earlier. Summit tiltmeters recorded over 22 microradians of tilt loss,

The southernmost vent is a new fissure that opened up around 1:12 AM HST this morning. It was accompanied by a small cluster of earthquakes and some ground deformation.

More vigorous dome fountaining began at both vents at 1:20 AM HST. Fountains from the north vent rapidly grew and are now approximately 30-70 feet high (10-20 meters) and increasing.

The south vent began erupting at 1:12 AM HST, north vent continues as well.

Lava became visible with spattering in the north vent at 12:55 am HST and began vigorously overflowing at 12::56 am HST. This appears to be the start of precursory overflows of degassed lava preceding the onset of episode 30 fountaining.
Kilauea Message 2025-08-05 08:51:55 HST
A helicopter overflight of the north vent this morning confirmed that lava is within 15-30 feet (5-10 meters) of the top of the vent. The lava is degassed and is feeding a low volume into a lava tube inside of older flows in the crater.
Kilauea Message 2025-08-04 06:08:34 HST
Lava rose in the north vent and overflowed with very little fountaining at 5:51 AM. This was followed by a drainback of lava from the vent at 5:59 AM indicating this was a precursory gas pistoning event.
