Kilauea Message 2025-09-16 16:01:40 HST
Starting at 10:47 AM HST today, there have been 13 gas pistoning events at the north vent. Magma rises and becomes visible in the vent; rapid drainback is marked by small spatter fountains and a spike in seismic tremor 10-15 min apart.
Kilauea Message 2025-09-02 20:09:30 HST
Episode 32 ended when the south and middle vents quit erupting at 8:01 p.m. HST on September 2. The eruption produced about 12.5 million cubic yards of lava, enough to fill a hole the size of a football field one mile deep!
Kilauea Message 2025-09-02 19:55:03 HST
North vent just shut down at 7:49 p.m. HST after just over 13 hours of fountaining. The south and middle vents continue to erupt.
Kilauea Message 2025-09-02 10:33:21 HST
The middle vent became active at about 10:10 a.m. HST followed by the south vent at 10:20 a.m. HST. Middle vent fountains are about 50 feet (15 meters) high.
Kilauea Message 2025-09-02 07:37:05 HST
The vortices on the south side of the fountain can be seen on the V3 streaming camera. The vortices are carrying volcanic pumice fragments up to 1000 feet into the air! The pumice looks like swarms of dark, angry bees on the webcam.
Kilauea Message 2025-09-02 07:33:23 HST
Current windshear and convection conditions on the south side of the fountain are perfect to creating rotating tornado-like vortices of volcanic pumice, ash, and dust. These are similar to dust devils seen in the desert.
Kilauea Message 2025-09-02 07:15:07 HST
Continuous lava fountains at the north vent began at 6:35 a.m. HST, alongside the onset of rapid deflationary tilt and strong seismic tremor. Episode 32 is underway, with inclined lava fountains reaching 500 feet (150 meters) in height.
Kilauea Message 2025-09-02 04:02:10 HST
A fifth overflow began at 3:58 am HST. The duration of the overflows continues to increase. The cyclic overflows will probably merge into continuous overflows of degassed magma clearing the vent for the start of episode 32.
Kilauea Message 2025-09-02 03:52:26 HST
A fourth overflow went from 3::33 AM t0 3:50 HST. Precursory overflows of this size and frequency indicate that degassed magma is being pushed from the vent and that the onset of episode 32 is likely in the next 24-48 hours.
Kilauea Message 2025-09-02 03:32:54 HST
Cyclic overflows of the north vent started at 2:48 AM HST followed by others at 2:58 and 3:12 AM HST. Durations increased from 6 to 10 to 14 minutes and ended with drainbacks of just a few feet. Fountains are about 10 feet.
Kilauea Message 2025-09-02 01:20:56 HST
Since around 8:30 p.m. HST on September 1, lava has filled the north vent several times during the course of gas pistoning cycles. At 12:44 a.m. HST, lava overflowed the vent for the first time in advance of eruptive episode 32.
Kilauea Message 2025-09-01 21:53:43 HST
Minor spattering has been occurring in the north vent over the past 24 hours. Magma rose to the top of the column and ponded under a thin crust. Occasional overflows alternate with minor drainbacks. All activity is confined to the vent.
