Water quality in southern Florida: Florida, 1996-98 Water quality in southern Florida: Florida, 1996-98
Major influences and findings for water quality and biology in southern Florida, including the Everglades, are described and illustrated. Samples were collected to determine total phosphorus, dissolved organic carbon, pesticides, mercury, nitrate, volatile organic carbon compounds, and radon-222. Water-management, agricultural, and land-use practices are discussed. Sixty-three species of...

Ethoxyresorufin-O-deethylase (EROD) activity in fish as a biomarker of chemical exposure Ethoxyresorufin-O-deethylase (EROD) activity in fish as a biomarker of chemical exposure
This review compiles and evaluates existing scientific information on the use, limitations, and procedural considerations for EROD activity (a catalytic measurement of cytochrome P4501A induction) as a biomarker in fish. A multitude of chemicals induce EROD activity in a variety of fish species, the most potent inducers being structural analogs of 2,3,7,8-tetracholordibenzo-p-dioxin...

Assessment of selected water-quality and biological data collected in the Wichita River basin, Texas, 1996-97 Assessment of selected water-quality and biological data collected in the Wichita River basin, Texas, 1996-97
The Wichita River Basin in northwest Texas (fig. 1) covers about 3,440 square miles (mi2 ) of the 94,500-mi2 Red River Basin. The drainage area above Lake Kemp (fig. 1) is 2,086 mi2. The Wichita River Basin is characterized by rolling plains and prairie with an average annual (1961–90) rainfall of 28.9 inches at Wichita Falls (population about 100,000), the largest city in the basin...
