Johnathan R Bumgarner

John is experienced in conducting and managing hydrologic studies and data-collection; coordinating the scientific and administrative direction of scientific programs; collaborating with stakeholders and cooperators to facilitate ongoing program and develop new program to meet their science needs; and supervising, training, and directing personnel conducting scientific work.


John Bumgarner earned B.S. and M.S. degrees in Geological Sciences from the University of Texas at Austin and is a licensed Professional Geologist in the state of Texas. Prior to joining the USGS in 2010, John was an environmental consultant and his major projects included groundwater assessments, vadose zone modeling, watershed and water-quality modeling, environmental flows assessments, contaminant source allocations, and contaminated sediments. As a Hydrologist in the USGS Central Texas Program Office, John conducted: groundwater-resources assessments of the transboundary Mesilla aquifer in NM, TX, and Mexico, and the Edwards-Trinity aquifer in Pecos County, TX; watershed modeling and brush management studies in the upper Guadalupe Basin, TX; and a watershed assessment of the Pecos River in NM and TX. John became the Studies Chief in the USGS South Texas Program Office in 2012 where he was responsible for coordinating the scientific, technical, and administrative direction of hydrologic investigations in South and West Texas. John joined the USGS Minnesota Water Science Center as the Investigations Chief in 2014 to serve in a similar capacity for Minnesota as he did for South and West Texas. John started in his current position as the Director of the USGS New Mexico Water Science Center (NM WSC) in early 2016. The NM WSC has 90 talented staff completing a diverse scientific program that includes research and data collection in the areas of hydrologic monitoring and trends, environmental geoscience, water sustainability, hydrogeology and geochemistry, and climate and surface processes.
