Meredith Hartwell manages internal and external communications for the USGS Southwest Biological Science Center as a Public Affairs Specialist.
Meredith is the Public Affairs Specialist for the U.S. Geological Survey’s Southwest Biological Science Center (SBSC), where she leads communications and outreach efforts. She joined the USGS in 2010 as a Technical Information Specialist and has since taken on a broader role in public affairs.
SBSC conducts research across the greater Southwest, with offices in Flagstaff and Tucson, Arizona, and Moab, Utah. Meredith manages both internal and external communications and content strategy for the center, including the website, social media, news releases, media relations, highlights, multimedia projects, and public outreach. She also curates and shares historic photographic and scientific archives that document the region’s landscapes and scientific legacy.

Saguaro National Monument is now Saguaro National Park. The decline is saguaros has continued but at a rate slightly less steep than predicted. Very few of the saguaro present in 1935 remain. Meanwhile, the regeneration of this forest has already begun, as shown by findings from a long-term study-plot located at left midground.

The river level is higher than it was 1890, and overall the amount of sand lining the river has declined or is now covered with riparian vegetation. Some of the sand bars appear to have shifted and aggraded.
