Global framework for communication of biological invasion risks Global framework for communication of biological invasion risks

Biological invasions, driven by the spread of non-native species, have become a critical global issue because of their far-reaching ecological and socioeconomic impacts. Effective communication of the risks of biological invasions is essential for implementing robust policy and legislation and gaining public support for conservation efforts. However, current policies often suffer from

Global glacier mass change in 2025 Global glacier mass change in 2025

Glaciers lost 408 ± 132 Gt of mass during the hydrological year 2025, equivalent to 1.1 ± 0.4 mm sea-level rise. Since 1975, glacier mass loss has totalled 9,583 ± 1,211 Gt, equivalent to 26.4 ± 3.3 mm of sea-level rise, with six of the highest mass-loss years on record occurring in the past seven years.

Global pegmatite-hosted lithium, cesium, and rubidium resources: A dataset for grade and tonnage modeling Global pegmatite-hosted lithium, cesium, and rubidium resources: A dataset for grade and tonnage modeling

Quantitative mineral resource assessments of potential undiscovered deposits can inform future mineral supply scenarios, but their accuracy is conditional on building robust grade and tonnage models of known deposits. This study presents an up-to-date global compilation and analysis of recently discovered and original, in-situ pegmatite-hosted Li, Cs, and Rb resources prior to historic...

Global primary and secondary microseism multi-decade geographic variation, secular intensification, and period lengthening Global primary and secondary microseism multi-decade geographic variation, secular intensification, and period lengthening

Earth's long-period background seismic wavefield is dominated by two distinct processes that couple ocean wave energy to a global microseism wavefield. We assess global microseism intensity in the secondary (4–10 s) and primary (14–20 s) bands, and across eight 2 s-wide period bands between 4 and 20 s. Robustly estimated primary and secondary secular amplitude trends are estimated at 73...

Ground motions from finite faults with unknown geometry Ground motions from finite faults with unknown geometry

Earthquake emergency response and loss modeling require accurate models of ground‐motion intensity metrics (IMs), such as those produced by ShakeMap. In the critical minutes and hours after an earthquake, however, knowledge of the earthquake source geometry limits the accuracy of these models, especially in areas where seismic instrumentation is insufficient to constrain the shaking...

Ground-motion aleatory-variability models for Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands Ground-motion aleatory-variability models for Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands

I develop independent logic trees for aleatory variability for crustal and subduction-zone (interface and intraslab) earthquakes for seismic hazards analyses in Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands (PRVI) from existing suites of ground-motion models (GMMs) and from ground-motion datasets, including a regional PRVI dataset. The aleatory variability models are parameterized using a...

Ground-motion characterization for the 2025 U.S. National Seismic Hazard Model for Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands Ground-motion characterization for the 2025 U.S. National Seismic Hazard Model for Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands

We develop the ground-motion characterization (GMC) for the 2025 U.S. National Seismic Hazard Model for Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands (NSHM-PRVI) for earthquakes in active crustal, subduction interface, and subduction intraslab regimes. Using ground-motion models (GMMs) from the Next-Generation Attenuation (NGA)-West2 and NGA-Subduction projects, the GMC is parameterized by...

Ground-motion simulations for the 2024 Mw 4.8 Tewksbury, New Jersey, earthquake Ground-motion simulations for the 2024 Mw 4.8 Tewksbury, New Jersey, earthquake

Ground-motion simulations of notable earthquakes in the central and eastern United States are limited and typically assume one-dimensional (1D) Earth structure. In this study, we use a three-dimensional (3D) seismic velocity model to better constrain the depth and focal mechanism of the April 5th, 2024, moment magnitude 4.8 Tewksbury earthquake and investigate the spatial variability of...

Groundwater and surface-water interactions in the Waihe‘e-Kahalu‘u watershed, O‘ahu, Hawai‘i—Analysis of historical data and numerical groundwater-model simulations Groundwater and surface-water interactions in the Waihe‘e-Kahalu‘u watershed, O‘ahu, Hawai‘i—Analysis of historical data and numerical groundwater-model simulations

The Waihe‘e-Kahaluʻu watershed and surrounding areas lie in a dike-impounded groundwater setting of the Ko‘olau Range, O‘ahu, Hawai‘i, where groundwater withdrawal from wells and tunnels have resulted in reductions in streamflow. Resource managers and surface-water users seek information that can be used to balance the needs of competing uses of groundwater and streamflow in the...

Groundwater budget for the Mountain Home area, southern Idaho, 2022–23 Groundwater budget for the Mountain Home area, southern Idaho, 2022–23

The U.S. Geological Survey, with funding from the Idaho Department of Water Resources, developed a groundwater budget for the Mountain Home area in southern Idaho for irrigation year 2023 (November 1, 2022–October 31, 2023). This study focused on the water balance across the Cinder Cone Butte Critical Groundwater Area (CGWA), Mountain Home Groundwater Management Area (GWMA), and the rest...

Groundwater dependency and hydroclimatic influences on riparian and upland vegetation productivity, Upper San Pedro, Arizona, United States Groundwater dependency and hydroclimatic influences on riparian and upland vegetation productivity, Upper San Pedro, Arizona, United States

In arid and semi-arid regions, groundwater sustains vegetation through subsurface water access, yet the responses of groundwater-dependent ecosystems (GDEs) to changing hydroclimate and groundwater availability are relatively understudied. This study investigates seasonal and spatial patterns in vegetation greenness using Landsat Enhanced Vegetation Index (EVI) values across riparian and...
