Underwater image of a wave breaking over a coral reef on Kwajalein Atoll in the Republic of the Marshall Islands. This image shows how the high hydrodynamic roughness of live, healthy corals causes friction that induces breaking of waves over coral reefs, reducing wave energy at the shoreline that can cause flooding and island overwash.

Amistad National Recreation Area includes the Amistad Reservoir, a man-made lake along the border of Texas and Mexico.

Marsh management projects on-going at Blackwater National Wildlife Refuge. Wetlands are planted and flooded during the Spring and Summer, then drained during the Fall and Winter. This provides sediment stabilization and habitat for migrating waterfowl.

Migratory waterfowl congregate at Coulson Pond in Blackwater National Wildlife Refuge. Blackwater serves as an important habitat for these waterfowl, and was established in 1933 as a waterfowl sanctuary for birds migrating along the Atlantic Flyway.

Fall colors can be seen in Upstate New York along the banks of the Tioughnioga River near Whitney Point.

The glorious Douglas fir forest on the west side of the Cascade Mountains, McKenzie Pass, Willamette National Forest. The Douglas fir is the Oregon state tree.

Colonies of “blade fire coral” that have lost their symbiotic algae, or “bleached,” on a reef off of Islamorada, Florida. Hard and soft corals are presently bleaching- losing their symbiotic algae – all over the coral reefs of the Florida Keys due to unusually warm ocean temperatures this summer.
