In the Corn Belt states of the Midwestern U.S., intensive row-cropping surrounds small streams, effectively eliminating riparian cover and habitat. Agricultural activities can have profound effects on the chemical and physical characteristics of small streams.

Outcrop of the Bouse Formation in Chemehuevi Valley, Whipple Mountains, Calfornia in background. The Bouse Formation includes sedimentary deposits that chronicle the first arrival of Colorado River water into desert basins downstream from Grand Canyon. The deposits in Chemehuevi Valley are particularly well-exposed.

Native westslope cutthroat trout swim in the north fork of the Flathead River in northwestern Montana. The region is recognized as a range-wide stronghold for genetically pure westslope cutthroat trout. However, rainbow trout invasion and hybridization threatens these populations.
