This video introduces research that Florence Bascom Geoscience Center (FBGC) scientists are conducting on the 500,000 year history of Arctic sea ice to assess changes in weather, sea ice extent, temperature and ecosystems.

A USGS Hydrologic Technician is briefly shown calibrating the compass on a remote controlled Qboat. The Qboat is then sent across the Millers River near South Royalston, Massachusetts to collect discharge data. This video shows the Qboat making several passes across the river.
 

The USGS assists FEMA with updating flood insurance rate maps throughout New England. This is in response to recent major flooding events and because of the need to update the 30 year-old effective flood insurance rate maps. This video gives a brief overview of the FEMA project team with a focus on the surveying component of the project.

This animation takes the viewer down the Glen Canyon from Bullfrog Bay to the Rincon, in the Glen Canyon National Recreation Area. New high resolution multibeam bathymetry collected by the USGS in 2018 shows the submerged portions of Glen Canyon. 
 

USGS scientists are studying water-quality conditions and harmful algal blooms—known as HABs—in Owasco, Seneca and Skaneateles lakes in New York. The USGS monitoring effort will provide a better understanding of HAB growth and severity and allow for near instantaneous detection of changing water-quality conditions that might be indicative of HAB development.

The USGS Coastal and Marine Geology Program is working to characterize the sea floor and shallow substrate in nearshore waters, using high-resolution geophysical techniques, sediment sampling, and sea-floor photography and videography.

Cave diving scientist David Brankovits from the USGS and Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution and DSO Jake Emmert (Moody Gardens) recover the OPP water sampling device designed and engineered by Emile Bergeron (USGS). The OPP collects samples across a chemical interface where bacteria entrain methane -- a dissolved gas -- into the food web.

USGS scientists, along with collaborators from the Marine Biological Laboratory, deployed a carbon flux tower on Great Marsh in 2017. Great Marsh is a 3800 acre salt marsh complex behind the Sandy Neck barrier beach in Barnstable, Cape Cod. This ecosystem is home to a variety of animals, including deer, fox, owls, and the rare Diamondback terrapin.

SEABed Observation and Sampling System (SeaBOSS) operations were conducted near Stellwagen Bank offshore of Massachusetts in cooperation with the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration's Stellwagen Bank National Marine Sanctuary aboard the sanctuary's research vessel, the R/V Auk.
