Landsat Collection 2

In 2019, the USGS will finalize the definition, production timeline and public availability of Landsat Collection 2 Level-1 and Level-2 products.

Two main components in Landsat Collection 2 will be improved geodetic accuracy using updated Landsat 8 Operational Land Imager (OLI) ground control points and/or the Sentinel 2 Global Reference Image (GRI). In addition, the USGS will distribute a Level-2 standard product suite that includes surface reflectance and surface temperature. 

Landsat Collection 2 will contain Level-1 and Level-2 products as part of the standard Landsat Product Generation System (LPGS). Landsat Collection 2 will include imagery from Landsat 8 Operational Land Imager (OLI)/Thermal Infrared Sensor (TIRS), Landsat 7 Enhanced Thematic Mapper Plus (ETM+), Landsat 4-5 Thematic Mapper (TM), and Landsat 1-5 Multispectral Scanner (MSS) instruments. Landsat 9 Operational Land Imager 2 (OLI-2)/Thermal Infrared Sensor 2 (TIRS-2) data will be included in Collection 2 in early 2021 after launch. The Landsat Collection 2 processing timeline would start no sooner than late in the calendar year of 2019. Landsat Collection 1 data processing and downloads will remain available during Collection 2 processing.

Notes: U.S. Landsat ARD for the conterminous United States, Alaska and Hawaii will be made available as a standalone product using Collection 2 Level-1 inputs. Collection 2 Level-2 MSS product feasibility studies are ongoing and will be shared with the Landsat user community upon their completion.

Level-1 Summary

In addition to an updated geometric registration base for Collection 2, the following minor changes will be implemented to preserve the capabilities for users relying on the current Collection-based Level-1 product:

  • Include angle bands (solar and sensor viewing zenith and azimuth) to allow users to generate their own Top of Atmosphere Reflectance and Top of Atmosphere Brightness Temperature bands.
  • Consistent Level-1 and Level-2 product Quality Assessment bands.
  • Improved product modeling to increase the number of scenes that process to a Level-1 Terrain Precision (L1TP).
  • Include TM/ETM+ Internal Calibrator (IC) shutter intrusion detection with associated metadata. 
  • Incorporate minor bug fixes and calibration/validation updates.

  • Collection 2 Level-1 products will continue to be provided in scene-based Universal Transverse Mercator/Polar Stereographic GeoTIFF format.

Level-2 Summary

As a new addition to Collection 2, a standard Level-2 product suite will be distributed that include the Level-1 scene-based standard product. The primary characteristics for Level-2 are:

  • Generated from all USGS Landsat Collection-based Level-1 inputs that meet the Solar Zenith Angle (SZA) constraint, and that include the required auxiliary data inputs to generate a scientifically viable product.
  • Consistent Level-1 and Level-2 product Quality Assessment bands.
  • Surface reflectance generated from the Landsat Ecosystem Disturbance Adaptive Processing System (LEDAPS), and Landsat Surface Reflectance Code (LaSRC) algorithms.
  • Surface temperature generated using the Rochester Institute of Technology and NASA Jet Propulsion Laboratory single channel algorithm.
  • Landsat 7 ETM+ surface temperature products will include both thermal bands i.e., Band 6L and Band 6H.
  • Metadata provided in Object Description Language (ODL) metadata (MTL) and Extensible Markup Language (XML) format.

  • Collection 2 Level-2 products will be provided in scene-based Unversal Transverse Mercator/Polar Stereographic GeoTIFF format. 

Sample Products
