Landsat Data Access

Since 2008, Landsat Level-1 data, as well as Level-2 and Level-3 science products held in the USGS archive, have been available for download at no charge from a variety of data portals. This page provides information about searching and downloading Landsat data and science products.

NOTELandsat Collection 1 based forward processing ended December 31, 2021. Starting January 1, 2022, all new Landsat acquisitions are processed into the Collection 2 inventory structure only. Users are encouraged to migrate their workflow to Landsat Collection 2 at their earliest convenience. Due to advancements in data processing and algorithm development, users are discouraged from using Collection 1 and Collection 2 interchangeably within the same workflow. Collection 1 products will remain available for search and download until December 31, 2022.

Landsat Collection 2 Level-3 Science Products

Landsat Collection 2 Level-3 Dynamic Surface Water Extent, Burned Area, and Fractional Snow Covered Area Science Products are generated using Landsat Collection 2 U.S. ARD. More information about these products can be found by accessing the Landsat Science Products page.

Landsat Collection 2 Bulk Downloads

EarthExplorer Landsat Collection 1 Level-1 Bulk Download Selection

The Bulk Download Application is an easy-to-use tool for downloading large quantities of Landsat Collection 2 products and can be used to automatically retrieve them with little to no user interaction. The application will automatically iterate through the scene list and download each until all have been processed. Downloads can be paused, skipped, and resumed easily.

On the EarthExplorer Results tab, scenes can be added to a bulk order by selecting the gold folder, as highlighted in this image.

Landsat Collection 1 Level-1 Scenes

Landsat Collection 1 Level-1 scenes are available for download at no charge from EarthExplorer. They are found under the Landsat category on the Data Set tab as shown in this image.  Landsat Collection 1 Level-1 data can also be accessed from GloVis.

Landsat Collection 1 Level-2, Level-3 Scenes

Currently, Collection 1 Level-2 Surface Reflectance scene-based data and other provisional products are processed by the USGS Earth Resources Observation and Science (EROS) Center Science Processing Architecture (ESPA) On Demand Interface.  Users can access ESPA directly or use EarthExplorer to submit Surface Reflectance processing requests.

ESPA: Requests submitted directly to ESPA require scenes be listed one per line within a text file (.txt). Along with Surface Reflectance processing, ESPA allows users to select several additional products and basic processing services:

All orders submitted through ESPA are processed within 2-5 days, depending on the size of the order and the quantity of orders in the system. An email confirmation is provided when the order is received, and another email is sent when the data is processed and includes a download link.

EarthExplorer: Requests for Surface Reflectance data processing for individual Landsat scenes can be submitted from EarthExplorer. These requests will be sent to the ESPA On-Demand interface for processing and data delivery.

On the EarthExplorer Data Sets tab, Surface Reflectance scenes can be found under the Landsat Collection 1 Level-2 (On-Demand) section as shown in this image

Landsat Collection 1 Landsat Level-3 Tiles

Landsat Collection 1 Level-3 Burned Area, Dynamic Surface Water Extent, and Fractional Snow Covered Area products are generated from Collection 1 U.S. Landsat Analysis Ready Data (ARD) Surface Reflectance data and are available to download from EarthExplorer.

On the EarthExplorer Data Sets tab, Level-3 products can be found under the Landsat Collection 1 Level-3 section, as shown in this image

Landsat Collection 1 U.S. Landsat Analysis Ready Data (ARD) Tiles

Landsat Collection 1 U.S. Analysis Ready Data (ARD) Tiles contain Landsat Collection 1 products that are consistently processed to the highest scientific standards and level of processing required for direct use in monitoring and assessing landscape change. ARD tiles contain Top-of-Atmosphere Reflectance, Top-of-Atmosphere Brightness Temperature, Surface Reflectance, Provisional Surface Temperature, and Pixel-level Quality Assessment data. U.S. Landsat Level-2 ARD are available for the Conterminous United States, Alaska, and Hawaii, and are downloadable at no charge from EarthExplorer.

Earth Explorer: On the EarthExplorer Data Sets tab, ARD Tiles can be found under the Landsat Analysis Ready Data (ARD) section, as shown in this image

AppEEARS

The Application for Extracting and Exploring Analysis Ready Samples (AppEEARS) enables users to subset U.S. Landsat ARD data using spatial, temporal, and band/layer parameters for Surface Reflectance and Pixel-level Quality Assessment data, reducing the volume of data downloaded by the end user.

Two types of sample requests are available in AppEEARS: point samples at specific geographic coordinates, and area samples for spatial regions of interest via vector polygons. Sample requests submitted to AppEEARS provide users with the desired analysis ready data values and decoded quality data values. Interactive visualizations with summary statistics are provided for each sample within the application, allowing users to preview and interact with their samples before downloading their data.

Landsat Collection 1 Level-1 and U.S. ARD Bulk Orders

The EarthExplorer Scene List Upload tool allows users to upload text files, and EarthExplorer Metadata exports or fast and easy downloading of Landsat Collection 1 and many other datasets found on EarthExplorer.
