Jana S Stewart

Jana Stewart is a Scientist Emeritus, previously Supervisory Physical Scientist with the USGS Upper Midwest Water Science Center, where she had worked since 1992.

Expertise

Her expertise is in regional modeling and decision support projects and multi-disciplinary studies that integrate scientific data, remote sensing, and empirical models with geographic information systems (GIS) and web-based technologies in support of water quality and use, and aquatic ecological assessments.

Professional Experience

2023 – Present, USGS, Scientist Emeritus, Upper Midwest Water Science Center

  • As a Scientist Emeritus, Jana helps plan and manage a National Water Use Modeling project and contribute to publications.

2020 – 2023, USGS, Supervisory Physical Scientist, Upper Midwest Water Science Center

  • Jana served as Team Leader of the Aquatic Contaminants team and contributed to the science leadership within the Upper Midwest Water Science Center. She also co-led a National Water Use Model development project in support of models to estimate water withdrawals and consumptive use for the Nation.

1992 – 2020, USGS, Geographer, Wisconsin and Upper Midwest Water Science Center

  • Jana worked on multi-disciplinary studies, particularly aquatic ecological assessments, as part of the NAWQA Program and played national roles helping to develop geospatial datasets, synthesize and archive national datasets, and develop aquatic biological databases. She served as Principal Investigator for regional modeling and decision support projects that integrate scientific data and empirical models with GIS and web-based technologies in the Great Lakes and Northeast US regions including the NorEaST Stream Temperature Web Portal, FishVis Decision Support Mapper, and Great Lakes Aquatic Gap projects in collaboration with Federal, State, local, university, and non-governmental organizations.

Jana is an avid outdooor enthusiast and loves gardening, and kayaking, skiing, and cycling with friends across the country.
