Networks At Risk identifies USGS monitoring locations threatened, discontinued, or recently rescued because of funding, staffing, access, or safety challenges. It also shows monitoring gaps and efforts to preserve essential data.
Networks At Risk (NAR) identifies U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) monitoring locations where one or more data-collection activities are in danger of being discontinued or reduced because of funding shortages, staffing constraints, loss of site access, or safety concerns. It also identifies locations where monitoring activities have been discontinued, as well as those that have been rescued through new funding sources or the resolution of staffing limitations.
The Networks At Risk Mapper, formerly known as Endangered, Discontinued, and Rescued Steamgages Mapper, was updated in 2026 to support its expansion from streamgages to include all USGS monitoring locations.
Definitions:
- Discontinued: Monitoring locations where activities were discontinued within the previous 13 months due to funding shortages, staffing constraints, loss of site access, or safety concerns.
- Rescued: Monitoring locations where activities were temporarily discontinued or converted to a reduced level of service but returned to full operation within the previous 13 months.
- Threatened: Monitoring locations where activities may be discontinued or converted to a reduced level of service.
Efforts are underway to secure replacement funding for each threatened monitoring activity. However, if replacement funding cannot be obtained, the affected data-collection activity may be discontinued. At locations affected by staffing limitations, the USGS is accelerating the modernization of network operations and identifying opportunities to minimize disruptions to data collection.
Historical data from discontinued monitoring activities will remain accessible. Once monitoring activities at a location are discontinued or rescued, the location will be displayed as either discontinued or rescued for 13 months.
